The English Football League (EFL) officially announced that the English Championship team Sheffield Wednesday was punished with a deduction of 12 league points due to financial problems. Before the points deduction, Sheffield Wednesday ranked bottom of the Championship with 6 points from 11 rounds. After the deduction, their points dropped to -6 points.
EFL official announcement:
The English Football League (EFL) officially confirmed that it has received a formal notice from Sheffield Wednesday club director James Ciri, indicating that it has taken the necessary steps to appoint an administrator for the club and the Hillsborough Stadium ownership company.
According to the league regulations mutually agreed upon by all clubs, this move will result in the club automatically deducting 12 points. But it also provides Sheffield Wednesday with the opportunity to push for a successful sale of the club and secure its future under new ownership.
The English Football League will immediately commence consultations with the Receivers to identify the emergency measures required to help them reach a resolution as quickly as possible and end the ongoing uncertainty faced by Sheffield Wednesday staff, management, players, fans and all relevant parties and the local community.
Due to improper financial management, Sheffield Wednesday has been in arrears with wages five times in the past seven months, and also owes about £1 million in debt to other teams and the British Revenue and Customs Service. Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly facing another points deduction from the English Football League due to other mismanagement issues.
